The pain and anguish from her ordeal gripped his entire body, especially around his heart. Never in his wildest imagination had he envisioned the horror his sweet love had suffered. He blinked rapidly, trying to withhold the tears burning in his eyes. If only there was a way he could reach into her and ease the torment she’d endured all these years.

He recalled the anguish he’d lived with when Maya was missing, but this was equal to—no, this was a great deal more. Tamie had stayed by his side to offer strength and comfort. She’d held his daughter in her arms while she’d poured her heart out and wept with them. Like a family.

Now it was his turn, and this wasn’t the time to fall apart. He needed to be the strong one. He needed to convince her she wasn’t responsible for a man’s death. She’d helped save all those children. Offering “there, there” comfort wasn’t what she needed. His approach would appear harsh and would hurt him just as much, but there was no other way.

He moved to take a firm stance in front of her and folded his arms across his chest. She kept her face buried in her knees. “Let me get this straight. You’re a terrible person because you worked yourself into exhaustion taking care of all those children and then saved them from a burning building. In the process, you were badly burned and scarred for life. Yup, you’re a terrible person, all right. Did you tell Hale to run back into the building?”

“No.”

She said it so softly he barely heard her. He dipped his head slightly. “Excuse me. I didn’t quite get your answer.”

She lifted her head and cried out, “No!”

“Were you the only one keeping count?”

“No.”

“So how are you responsible? Oh, that’s right, you’re Wonder Woman!”

He didn’t flinch from the blaze of temper that glowed in her eyes, confirming his harsh approach was working.

“How can you be so unsympathetic!” she screamed. “I’m responsible for a man’s death!”

“I never thought you’d be the woe-is-me kind of person and feel sorry for yourself.”

“You’re cold and heartless! I knew you’d never understand!”

Her eyes were swollen, and hot tears continued to run down her cheeks. He’d pushed her far enough, and his patience with her beating herself up was spent.

“Bullshit!” He slipped his arm under her bent knees and wrapped a strong arm around her shoulders to pick her up.

“Put me down, you insensitive bastard! I don’t want you to hold me,” she ordered, shoving her temper-driven hands against his shoulders.

“Not in this lifetime!” He kept walking.

She started to thrash against his hold when she realized where they were headed. “What are you doing?”
